An Introductory Post!

Welcome to the first "On the Woolsack" blog - my personal thoughts about agriculture, economics and the world in general.

Those readers familiar with UK politics will know that the Woolsack is the seat used for the Speaker of the House of Lords, and is literally a red sack filled with wool. The Woolsack was initially chosen for this high profile job as it represented the importance that the English wool industry played within the economy at the time, something which has changed with high quality wool currently fetching around 50p/kg!

This change in fortune for the wool industry highlights the way in which we have seen the economy evolve over the last 500 years. Looking forward, we already know there are many more challenges for the economy, and more seriously the population, to overcome than we have seen in the past. Both climate change and an increasing world wide population are high on the policy makers' agenda, yet the size of these problems, or how we intend to tackle them are not clear to the common man.

From my now worthless wool sack I intend to commentate on, and hopefully add to, the debate as the world unravels!
